What Should Your Office Cleaning Checklist Really Include?

A tidy desk is a good start. A useful cleaning plan goes a little further.

What Should Your Office Cleaning Checklist Really Include?

Start with the spaces people share

List the kitchen, washrooms, meeting rooms and entrances before you look at individual desks. High-use spaces usually need more frequent attention than quieter rooms, and they are often where first impressions are made for visitors and new starters alike.

Walk the office at a busy time of day and note where people gather. The kettle, the printer and the door handles to the washrooms will tell you more about your cleaning needs than a floor plan ever could.

Think about touchpoints, not just surfaces

Light switches, lift buttons, door push plates, shared keyboards and meeting room remotes are handled constantly. Give them their own line on the checklist so they are not lost in a general "wipe surfaces" task.

It also helps to agree which products are suitable for electronics and screens, so nothing is damaged and staff know what has been cleaned.

Separate daily jobs from deeper cleaning

Daily tasks might include bins, touchpoints and washrooms. Carpet extraction, high-level dusting, window cleaning and detailed kitchen cleaning belong on a separate periodic schedule; weekly, monthly or quarterly depending on use.

Splitting the list this way keeps the routine realistic and makes it easy to see when the bigger jobs were last done.

Don't forget the bits nobody owns

Stationery cupboards, the fridge, the top of the server cabinet and the bike store are classic grey areas. Decide whether they sit with the cleaning team or with staff, and write it down.

A short "who does what" note pinned in the kitchen saves a surprising amount of friction.

Make the checklist specific to your Bristol office

A coworking space near Temple Meads has different footfall from a small Clifton office or a business unit in Filton. Agree access times, key holding, alarm codes and how you will review the work together.

A site visit is the best way to get this right: it turns a generic list into one that genuinely fits how your team works.
